I wish I could share the article, but John specifically asked me not to. It can be found in "Psychological Perspectives," which is a journal published by the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles, issue 27 Fall-Winter 1992. Nancy, the fabulous librarian there, might be able to help you procure a copy. The article's title is "Identifying the American Shadow: Typological Reflections on the Los Angeles Riots."

Stay tuned, however -- I plan to be sharing other Beebe articles and videos soon, albeit on my other website, www.TypeInsights.com

> I’m not sure I understand this phrase: “introverted feeling also tends to ignore social limits regarding the communication of critical responses, to the point of appearing to depreciate others.” I think it means that when using this function, we may not know when to stop criticizing, but I’m not certain. If anyone cares to try interpreting this statement so that I can make sense of it, I would be grateful.

It seems to me that this is less a matter of not knowing *when to stop criticizing* and more a matter of not knowing *how to criticize*. There is such a thing as ripping someone to shreds not just by what one says, but even more by how one says it. (I know, I've done it when my personal "hot buttons" have been pushed. In what I count my most infamous example, I often say that I might as well have written that letter with lava on asbestos.)

When one's "personal feelings" (Fi in this case?) get involved, it's easy to descend into some kind of ad hominum argument (or some other fallacious argument) against one's opponent. There are social restraints against that sort of thing for a reason; not only are such arguments logical fallacies and thus enemies of truth and clear thinking, but they provoke quarrels rather than promote peace.

Hey Vicky Jo,
I have been giving some thought to the comment, “introverted feeling also tends to ignore social limits regarding the communication of critical responses, to the point of appearing to depreciate others”. If my understanding is correct, it is the Fe function, rather than Fi that pays particular attention to the external social norms and the effect that any communication or interaction may have on the other participants. Fi is much more concerned with internal values and what things are important to a person individually. Therefore, I would extend your interpretation of the quoted phrase slightly. It could be that, rather than in addition to not knowing when to stop criticizing, Fi might not even be prompting the person to realize that they even are. From an Fi perspective it could simply be that they are attempting to correct the other person’s ‘erroneous’ position or point out how important the issue personally is. Unfortunately the more Fi feels violated by the opposing point of view then the more it would prompt to fight back and hold its own. My suspicion is that this behavior would then come across as somewhat depreciating to the recipient.
Just my thoughts…
Best regards,
Charles
