That is a tricky question for INFJ, because if someone would come up and ask me if I have firm inner values, my answer would be "of course I do". After all, beeing an introvert I do a lot of thinking and evaluating of my life - I might even believe that I have firmer inner values than most other people do.

And then recently I had this conversation with INTJ friend, who have known me for 9 years:
"You have no values of your own" - he told matter-of-factly.
"But I DO HAVE, you just don't know them" - I replied, almost feeling insulted.
"No you don't - you just conform to the rules of the society and try to be a good citizen". I was speechless after that :)

You know, this assessment makes a lot of sense -- and it seems to confirm what I've been coming to believe of late, that I'm an INFJ who's been mistyped most of his adult life as an INTJ. I am indeed in touch with the values of my community, and so far as I understand their relevance I agree with them. It's understanding what I value for myself that has taken much longer to understand. If I understand the implications of the Eight Level chart, this isn't nearly so true for INTJs, because for them Fi is the 3rd Primary process and not the 6th Shadow Process as with INFJs.

Hi Vicky Jo,
Thanks for sharing this very informative and interesting post. I guess, therefore, the crux of the issue is how to distinguish between our internal, personal values and the values of those around us or those of the society with which we associated. Certainly, I can see how I may have inherited or adopted many of, what I perceive to be, my values from others around me rather than them being uniquely and innately mine. Anyway I am surprised and impressed that you have been able to devise a way to distinguish between those values that we've adopted, unconsciously or otherwise, and those that are innate to our core selves.

Best regards,
Charles :)

What a very affirming post. I have frequently said that I have little idea what my values are... to the disbelief, usually, of those who hear (or read). I would say I stand for Christian values, in general - but not necessarily what other people think of as Christian values. 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart... (etc)... and your neighbour as yourself' seems to me to sum it up nicely, and I'm not sure of the value (lol) of any other values. Maybe I'll find some as I continue to get older! I do like the Eleanor Roosevelt didn't like being in the public eye. I would hate to be married to a politician or any other famous person. I think anonymity is great...

(PS.. there are some strange colours in these comment fields, at least in Firefox. White text on pale yellow for the name and mail, means I didn't think I was typing anything until I highlighted it)
