Misconceptions About INFJ
I’m perpetually amazed by how many people report having INFJ preferences. I’ve seen Improvisers, Stabilizers, Theorists, and other Catalysts all identify this way—often based on online quizzes, informal observations, or third-party suggestions. Sometimes the reasoning is a bit... circular: “I know I’m an INFJ based on how I react to people in this forum. But where do I get the formal diagnosis?”
The Trouble with Tests
No assessment can truly meet you. Even the official MBTI, when properly administered, is accurate only about 70% of the time. Many free online quizzes lack validity altogether, yet people often accept those results without question. Mis-typing is rampant and can mislead people into constructing a false identity.
When Type Becomes Identity
Once someone claims a type, they often begin to defend it—sometimes intensely. INFJ, often billed as the “rarest type,” has a strong appeal. But attachment to type labels can override honest self-reflection. As Dr. Linda Berens notes, “Type becomes the story people tell themselves about who they are.”
Even the Experts Struggle
I’ve met professionals who administer the MBTI and still got their own type wrong—multiple times! Typological discernment is complex. If experienced facilitators and authors can try on multiple type patterns before settling, it’s natural for any of us to go through a similar journey.
The Echo Chamber Effect
Online communities can create echo chambers that reinforce a chosen type identity. If you’re consistently saying “I’m not a typical INFJ,” it might be worth re-examining the pattern. INFJ is not superior—it’s just one of sixteen complex and worthy type codes.
What to Do Instead
Validate. Go deeper than surface-level descriptions. Read widely. Use multiple models. Study the psychological functions in context. And if you’re stuck between INFJ and INFP, I’ve created a dedicated resource to help navigate that distinction. Clarity comes through careful inquiry. Click here to visit my “INFJ or INFP website.”
Final Thoughts
This isn’t about gatekeeping—it’s about discernment. If INFJ truly fits, may this site be a mirror. If not, I hope it becomes a compass. There are fifteen other rich and beautiful patterns to explore. And yes, many actual INFJs initially test as something else—so keep your clarification sneakers on. The journey is real.
