What Is Personality?
We hear the word personality all the time:
“She has a wonderful personality.”
“He’s such a character.”
“It’s just how she is.”
“We have a personality conflict.”
“He’s full of personality.”
“She’s just like her mother.”
“He has no personality.”
But what does personality actually mean?
Personality as Psychological Pattern
At its core, personality refers to the underlying psychological patterns—our individual ways of perceiving, valuing, and responding—that give rise to how we show up in the world. These patterns shape how we think, feel, relate, and choose. They’re dynamic, not static; they evolve with time, experience, and reflection. And they point toward the deeper structures of the psyche—what C.G. Jung called typology.
Beyond Traits and Masks
Personality is not a trait checklist or a social mask, though it may involve both. It’s a psychological construct we use to make sense of human behavior—our own and others’. The word itself derives from the Latin persona, meaning “mask”—suggesting not just the ways we present ourselves, but the deeper self behind them.
Three Dimensions of Personhood
Each of us is, in certain respects:
– Like all other people
– Like some other people
– Like no other person
In short, the development of personality—or psychological type—is about fidelity to the laws of one’s own being.
The Search Within
So how do we discover that? Are we doomed to endless self-analysis and existential rabbit holes? For years, I wrestled with these questions. I read books—psychology texts, pop psych bestsellers, anything that promised insight—but nothing quite clicked. It wasn’t until I encountered the models of psychological types that things began to fall into place.
A Framework That Lasts
Finally, I was provided with language to articulate my experience—and frameworks I could explore myself through. Even more, I could start to understand others with greater clarity and compassion.
If there’s something better out there, I haven’t found it yet. And honestly, I’m not finished exploring these models—I suspect they may last me a lifetime.
What follows is a personal (and psychological) journey through the models that have empowered me—ones that have helped me become more fully myself, and more deeply in tune with others. I believe they can do the same for you.
