INFJ and Temperament: Understanding the Pattern Beneath the Personality
Many explore psychological type through MBTI, but fewer delve into the older and more foundational framework of Temperament. Far from a lesser cousin to cognitive functions, Temperament reveals the values beneath our typological pattern.
I often tell people: you don’t truly understand type until you’ve understood Temperament. It can even transform relationships, as it did in my own life.
Why Temperament Matters
Many believe everyone is the same deep down. But this assumption can damage relationships. Understanding others' core psychological needs—like a Catalyst’s need for meaning—can foster healing and insight.
The Platinum Rule
Beyond the Golden Rule lies the Platinum Rule: treat others as they would want to be treated. To do that, we must first understand who they truly are—and Temperament gives us the lens to see them.
A Model Rooted in History
From ancient times to modern psychology, four essential human configurations recur: Theorist, Improviser, Catalyst, Stabilizer. These echo in many systems—from Hippocrates to Jungian-informed typology.
The Four Temperaments
Improviser: Seeks freedom, spontaneity, and results.
Stabilizer: Craves order, duty, and tradition.
Theorist: Driven by knowledge and competence.
Catalyst (like INFJs): Motivated by purpose, meaning, and personal growth.
Next Steps
If you suspect you may be a Catalyst, this is where the real work begins. Temperament reveals not what you admire—but what you can't live without.
